This paper explains how diet plays a role in managing the effects of many diseases found in older companion animals including cognitive dysfunction and osteoarthritis, highlighting the many health consequences of obesity. It discusses the importance of completing a nutritional assessment covering patient, current diet, and feeding management, before recommending dietary changes. It proposes that weight reduction is best achieved in most cases through diets with lower calorie density, higher protein content, and a higher nutrient:calorie ratio.
