This article reviews the dietary treatment of 13 dogs with idiopathic chronic colitis that had loose feces, blood and/or mucus in the feces, tenesmus, increased defecation frequency, vomiting, weight loss and flatulence. Biopsy of the samples revealed lymphocytic, plasmacytic infiltration in the lamina propria of the colon. All 13 dogs were successfully managed for 2-28 months with a low residue, highly digestible and relatively hypoallergenic diet, suggesting the role of the diet in the pathogenesis and therapy of this condition.
