This article reviews the correlation between diet and large intestine diseases such as colitis in dogs and cats. A response to luminal antigens seems to be involved in colitis. However, 10% of dogs with clinical signs of colitis have functional diarrhoea associated with stress factors. Symptomatic treatment is warranted in these dogs. Novel protein diets with fermentable fibre and PUFA seem to be highly valuable for the treatment of these conditions.
