Humans often are assuming that dogs can consume foods not suitable for humans, such as spoiled food, garbage and carrion that results in fenterotoxins ood poisoning. Many types of pathogenic bacteria grow rapidly in discarded food as it is often high in proteins and carbohydrates. Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus commonly cause enterotoxin food poisoning in dogs and people with vomiting within couple of hours of ingestion and diarhea within hours and up to 2 days that can be severe and hemorrhagic. Fluid and electrolyte abnormalities and acid-base imbalance follow and require treatment. This book chapter focuses on enterotoxin poisoning in dogs.
