This study aimed at evaluating the nutritional composition, including macronutrient, fatty acids, amino acids and essential minerals of four vegan pet foods available in the Brazilian Market. (Three for dog and one for cats) Results obtained were compared to the FEDIAF and AAFCO recommendations.
All foods met the recommendations for crude protein and fat. However results showed multiple inadequacies in the four tested diets: all exceeded the maximum safe recommendation for Copper and had Ca:P ratio below the minimum recommended. Food A had a excess of Zinc and methionine, sodium and calcium deficiency. Food C also presented Iron excess. The cat food exceeded the zinc concentrations but did not contain any arachidonic acid, it was also deficient in arginine, potassium and protein and taurine in unit/kg. All food analyzed had some nutritional inadequacies and should not be recommended.
