Nothing to Sneeze At: New Strategies for Controlling Cat Allergy

Cat allergy affects about one in five adults worldwide. Symptoms range from stuffy nose to asthma attacks. The major culprit in cat allergies is a protein excreted in the cat’s skin, saliva and urine known as “Fel d1”. Immunotherapy can be an effective treatment but usually requires years of injections.
Other potential treatments researchers are working on include Antibody- Blocking Approach, Vaccinating Kitty or Allergen Reducing Cat Food.
HypoCat is a vaccine under study, which can be administered to cats to reduce their allergen load.
Pro Plan LiveClear by Nestlé Purina is a new cat food producing using eggs that contain an anti Fel d1 antibody, that will bind to the Fel d1 in cats saliva neutralizing it. In a recent study cats eating this kibble had 47% fewer allergens in their fur.
Besides stay away from cats there still isn’t a convenient treatment for cat allergy but researchers continue on the hunt for new treatments.
