Veterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice

As small animal probiotic or synbiotic products do not meet the criteria to qualify as probiotics, and existing studies are insufficient (some only evaluate non-specific routine diagnostic parameters or faecal scores), this review aims to assess the available evidence for treatments for: parvovirus infections, acute haemorrhagic diarrhoea syndrome in dogs, and tritrichomonas fetus infection in cats. In dogs, specific probiotics for inflammatory bowel disease may decrease clinical severity, but more studies focusing on functional outcomes are needed to make good use of probiotics and synbiotics in both dogs and cats.
